The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
