Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
